Commission seeks mural sites, student partnerships as funding for paid public art remains limited

Commissioners reviewed earlier plans for murals and sculptures and agreed to pursue practical next steps: check with property owners (post office, Del Arte), explore a Cal Poly service-learning partnership for student design and installation, and seek possible donors or volunteers if city funding is limited.

A commissioner noted typical pay rates and prior examples while framing low-cost approaches: "I think $10 a square foot... and there was one ... they paid them $2,000," and colleagues proposed posting a call for artists, seeking service-learning projects, or asking for pro bono work in exchange for credit and local recognition. The commission assigned follow-ups: one commissioner will contact Del Arte's board, another will check with the post office building owner, and a third will approach Cal Poly's art department about a potential class project. The commission stressed that any mural work needs agreement from property owners and, if paid installation is requested, clarity on budget and compensation.
