Local nonprofit leader says contracting practices pushed programs out of Carson

At the listening session portion of the briefing, Brandy Lewin, CEO of Murdoch Community and Care Services Inc., criticized the city's contracting practices and said she removed a weekend recreational program from Carson after contract terms she described as untenable.

"We tried it for a year, and then later you asked for a contract to take 60% of my profits," Lewin said, asking for a candid follow-up meeting where the city would discuss how nonprofits and small providers can practically partner with municipal programs rather than being shut out. City Manager David Roberts responded that this was the first time he had heard about her specific case and offered to speak with her after the meeting to learn more and pursue solutions.

Lewin and other nonprofit representatives also urged better follow-up, clearer permit processing, and tangible steps to include small community-based organizations in Paralympic and Carson X programming.
