Commission seeks detailed truck counts and alternative access after safety concerns around entrance curve

Traffic and site access dominated a large portion of the discussion as residents and commissioners raised safety concerns about the proposed entrance near a blind curve. Commissioners requested a vehicle‑type breakdown, peak daily truck counts and engineering evidence that the acceleration/deceleration lanes will mitigate conflict at the site entrance.

Greg Hunt estimated operations could move roughly 500,000 tons a year and "maybe 20 trucks a day," primarily double‑trailers hauling coal. Multiple commissioners said that placing the entrance at the current curve would create an unacceptable risk during high‑traffic weekends and suggested moving the entrance north or building a frontage road if feasible. The applicant agreed to work with engineers to test those alternatives and to provide a truck‑count PDF and route analysis to the commission by email before the next meeting.
