Blue Lake council creates mayor-led rotating ad hoc to set future agendas

The Blue Lake City Council voted to form an agenda-setting ad hoc committee composed of the mayor and a rotating council designee, following a lengthy discussion about transparency, municipal-code language and the risk of serial or improper meetings.

Council members expressed differing preferences for a narrow mayor-and-manager model versus a broader committee; after motion and an amendment the council approved language that allows the mayor to appoint a rotating designee to participate in agenda preparation. City Attorney Ryan Botts explained the municipal code baseline and said the mayor already has authority to appoint ad hoc members; he advised the council that the committee should avoid exceeding Brown Act bounds. "If that's your motion, that the agenda setting committee is the mayor and his designee," Botts said while describing the practical mechanics.

The motion passed amid several abstentions; members asked staff to return with a clear written policy and proposed municipal-code updates to reconcile existing council manuals and practices.
