Council approves I‑Street neighborhood traffic survey; commissioners and residents favor simple signs

The Public Safety Commission presented a draft neighborhood survey to gather resident preferences for traffic calming in the I‑Street area (H, I and J Streets). Commissioners said prior outreach shows a core group of nearby neighbors favor small‑scale interventions; the commission recommended mailed surveys to reach those who do not attend meetings.

Commissioners and multiple residents urged the council to implement simple, low‑cost measures such as posted speed limits and radar speed feedback signs rather than expensive traffic circles or other large infrastructure. “Put in speed limit signs,” a commissioner said, and added that radar signs typically run between $1,000 and $2,000 for solar‑powered units. Council members suggested revising the questionnaire to ask respondents to rank their top three options and set a return deadline; the council authorized limited printing and distribution and accepted that commissioners and volunteers could assist with collection.

Staff estimated printing for roughly 55 houses would be minimal and said the safety commission could take the lead on distribution. Council directed staff and the commission to finalize wording, add a deadline to the survey and return results for council consideration.
