County environmental-health presentation flagged skunk rabies in Blue Lake; commission urges pet vaccinations

At the Nov. 3 meeting commissioners relayed public-health guidance from a Humboldt County environmental-health presentation that covered rabies cases in local wildlife and precautions for residents. The presenter identified skunks, bats and foxes as common rabies carriers and described recent local incidents in which animals acted abnormally and were later confirmed positive.

Commissioners stressed three main actions for residents: vaccinate pets (particularly cats), avoid feeding wild animals that draw wildlife into yards, and treat any contact with dead or abnormal wildlife as potentially infectious — wear gloves, double-bag and contact environmental health for free animal testing.
