Board advances multiple policy updates, including new immunization and safety provisions

The board approved a slate of policy updates. Among them, the immunization policy changes were described as aligning district policy with statute and removing previously allowed religious or philosophical exemptions for most students (except certain students with IEPs grandfathered under the change). The board also approved policies for pest management, weapons/violence and school safety updates (including adding nicotine to the list), and transportation and bus‑driver drug and alcohol testing procedures.

"You can no longer claim a religious or philosophical exemption, other than those with an IEP who have been grandfathered," Dr. Foley said while outlining the immunization change that reflects new statutory requirements. Board members voted to advance the listed policies: some were approved for second reading and final adoption, and others were approved to proceed on their first reading as described on the agenda.

Board discussion focused on clarity of language and ensuring required notifications and coordinator responsibilities are spelled out for pest management and that van drivers are included in transportation policies.
