Winthrop Public Schools presents midpoint review of five‑year strategic plan

Megan White, director of teaching and learning for Winthrop Public Schools, presented a midpoint update on the district’s five‑year strategic plan (approved December 2023).

White said the plan’s curriculum, instruction and assessment work is about 90% complete for required areas, with remaining elective course frameworks outstanding. She described a color‑coding system in the board packet (blue = completed, green = ongoing, yellow = upcoming, red = not yet started) and highlighted achievements including a new middle‑school health position hired for 24‑25 and improved documentation and public availability of curriculum frameworks.

White also flagged areas needing continued attention: the district needs a modern technology plan (the last approved plan expired in 2020), a planned audit of gifted and talented programming delayed by staff turnover and retirement, and further professional development on formative assessment practices. She cited progress in expanding family engagement, student extracurricular opportunities and building safety measures such as updated safety plans, cameras and vaping sensors at the middle and high schools.

Board members thanked the administrative team for the roadmap and progress and asked follow‑up questions about timelines for the technology plan and gifted‑program audit.
