Board approves first readings for temperature, child‑find and memorials policy updates and repeals several regulations

The Winthrop School Board approved motions to move several policy updates forward for first reading and agreed to repeal some outdated regulations based on policy‑committee recommendations.

The policy committee recommended adopting a new EBBD temperature standard policy that outlines comfort thresholds and encourages measures (not necessarily air conditioning) when temperatures fall below 65°F or exceed 85°F; the committee highlighted operational flexibility such as opening windows or rescheduling tests on extreme days. The committee also recommended updating child‑find policy (IHBAC) to reflect statutory changes allowing students to remain in school until age 22 when appropriate.

On memorials (FFA), the committee recommended striking language that barred announcing deaths or memorializing on reader committees and removing a provision that allowed the committee to approve permanent memorials such as trees or plaques; the committee argued that permanent installations are problematic during future renovations and recommended grandfathering current memorials while preventing new permanent plantings.

The board voted unanimously to approve the committee’s recommendations for first readings and to repeal certain regulations (JKGA time‑out rooms, JKAA‑R therapeutic restraint regulation and EBCA‑R death announcements) as redundant or inconsistent with current practice. Chair noted the policy‑committee aim to review policies on a five‑year cycle and modernize language where appropriate.
