Spokane County commissioners unanimously declare local emergency as multiple wildfires burn

Spokane County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution declaring a local emergency to respond to multiple active wildfires, enabling emergency management and county departments to acquire supplies and equipment without standard procurement procedures. Commissioner Kearns moved the resolution citing chapter 38.52 RCW and related statutes; the motion passed by voice vote with all commissioners saying "aye."

The declaration covers the Old Trails Fire, the Fairview Fire and the Meadowview Autumn Lane Fire and allows county officials to streamline purchases and coordinate resources with cities, fire districts, the state and federal partners. Chair Commissioner Brooks opened the meeting and said the move would "enable emergency management and community departments to purchase necessary supplies, equipment, and materials to address the fires without going through the normal applicable processes."

The board's action was procedural but immediate: commissioners traded brief remarks of sympathy for affected residents and gratitude for first responders before the vote. The declaration also authorizes virtual approval procedures for signatures because the meeting was held remotely.
