After successful karaoke night, commission considers adding budget and acts for 2027 Lufkin series

Commissioner John Dorhauer reviewed this year’s Lufkin family entertainment series, calling the recent karaoke night a success and reporting similar turnout for both events. Commissioners praised the local-performer focus and discussed whether the series should expand to three events, add a budget for outside performers and sound engineering, and continue to prioritize local talent.

Dorhauer suggested a possible "Ravinia-style" addition — a jazz or chamber-music act — that would require a budgeted fee and sound engineering. The commission noted budget planning timelines (staff said the budget is being prepared now and that requests should align with the board’s fall calendar). "If the series goes well this year, that might lead into having an opportunity for a budget for future offerings," Dorhauer said. Staff and the board liaison offered suggested vendor contacts and reminded the commission to prepare a requested budget packet so the board can consider it during its October budget finalization process.

The commission agreed to plan now and to bring budget requests and draft event dates to the next meeting so a recommendation can be forwarded to the board during the budget cycle.
