Tompkins County approves purchase of body cameras; lawmakers stress careful implementation

The Tompkins County Legislature approved an appropriation to purchase body cameras and related services after committee review.

Jim Dennis moved the appropriation and emphasized that the purchase reflected committee recommendations, and other legislators voiced support while raising caveats about policy implementation. One legislator said the county should continue to review retention and access policies and that cameras are a tool that requires careful training and oversight: "I think it is important we're doing it... but there are elements of their implementation that I hope that we continue to watch carefully and reevaluate as time goes by," the legislator said. Another member urged that contracts allow the county to change technology over time.

A short roll call was held and the chair announced the vote as unanimous. Members noted the committee review and coordination with municipal partners during the procurement process.
