Debate over ICE and Delaney Hall drives heated public comment at Sussex County meeting

One of the most contested topics during the July 29 special meeting was the board's consideration of a resolution concerning local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement (labeled resolution B). Numerous residents described experiences at Delaney Hall and argued the county should not relax protections that limit local law-enforcement cooperation with ICE.

Speakers raised allegations of harsh detention conditions and operational misconduct at Delaney Hall and argued that allowing broader federal enforcement presence in schools, hospitals and other protected locations would harm families and businesses. "There are children at Delaney Hall," one commenter said, "The ICE agents have no regard for human life." Other residents shared incidents they said involved masked agents, canceled visitation and dangerous conduct during transport or local operations.

Opponents of the resolution argued the measure was symbolic and would not change state law; they urged the board to table the measure and hold wider public hearings. Supporters said the county should assert a policy position and express concern about identified issues. After public comment and commissioner discussion, the board adopted the ICE-related resolution by roll call. Several speakers and community organizations asked the board to pursue additional community outreach and to clarify whether indemnity, oversight or operational protocols would follow if legal obligations required local cooperation with federal agencies.
