Speakers urge Sussex County commissioners to focus on local services, not symbolic resolutions

Several residents used public comment at the July 29 special meeting to press the board to concentrate on local services and fiscal responsibility rather than symbolic measures. Speakers from teachers' unions, veterans and neighborhood residents emphasized infrastructure, school funding, accessible housing and the cost of county meetings.

Angela DeLucia, president of the Sussex County Education Association, told commissioners the meeting was an inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars and public time if it produced only symbolic resolutions: "Emergency meetings should be reserved for urgent action that protects the public... Tonight's agenda does none of that." Other commenters raised local concerns including failing utility poles, school staffing, and programs for people with disabilities.

A number of commenters urged the board to table the resolutions, expand outreach and hold broader community hearings rather than taking immediate action. The board did not table the items and ultimately adopted both resolutions by roll call; several attendees told the board they planned to use the November ballot to hold commissioners accountable.
