Subcommittee reviews update to temporary athletic coach policies to align with CSBA guidance

Ken Fallsgraff, a board member, convened the Policy and Management Subcommittee on Dec. 11 and turned the meeting over to staff to review proposed updates to three district board policies and corresponding regulations governing temporary athletic team coaches. Staff said the three items — policies 4127, 4227 and 4327 — were last updated in 2005 and the district should align them with a California School Board Association model dated 06/01/2024.

Staff outlined a new reporting requirement, saying "the superintendent or designee shall regularly report to the board regarding the extent to which district coaches have completed the trainings required by law," and listed the specific education-code references that the revisions would call out. The subcommittee discussed the practical implications for head coaches and other coaching positions, with staff confirming the updates apply to both head coaches and all other coaches.

The presentation emphasized that the proposed language is intended to make the district’s expectations explicit and reduce legal risk by ensuring required certifications and trainings are completed and tracked before a coach oversees a team. No formal motion or vote took place during the subcommittee meeting; staff indicated the items may return to a future meeting and noted the next full board meeting is scheduled for June 22.
