A staff member told the subcommittee the proposed revisions would specifically require the district to reference multiple education-code requirements in its policies, including what the staff read as "Ed code 3 3 4 7 9.6," which the presenter said requires coaches to be trained to recognize and respond to sudden cardiac arrest and that "this training must be taken every 2 years."
Staff also listed coaching-education components the district intends to require: coaching philosophies aligned with district goals, sports psychology and communications, sport pedagogy, physiology and training principles, fitness and nutrition, awareness about substances, risk management, and training in CPR, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and first aid. The presenter noted concussion and heat-illness recognition and response as part of the package and referenced Ed. Code citations when describing the proposed text. The subcommittee did not vote; staff indicated the text will be incorporated into the policies and regulations under review.
