Tampa tree program plants 2,160�trees; council debates preference for larger canopy species

Urban forestry staff told council the Tremendous Trees program has mapped and planted 2,160 street trees at a cost of about $735,000, drawn from prior funds that the program administers. "We have planted 2,160 tremendous trees at the cost of $735,000.46," urban forestry manager Kurt Nucchi reported, and he supplied a species breakdown showing 27% larger type 1/2 canopy trees and 73% smaller ornamental type 3 trees.

Several councilmembers and public commenters urged a policy preference for planting larger canopy trees where space allows. Staff explained the prevalence of smaller ornamentals is driven by site constraints — overhead utility lines, underground utilities and narrow planting strips — and suggested program changes such as an applicant checkbox and educational material on pruning for commonly requested species like crepe myrtle. Council directed further discussion and requested staff bring the matter back under unfinished business for Aug. 6 with the intent of returning a contract (or a revised contract) by Aug. 27 for formal action.
