Phippsburg board approves ad hoc solid-waste committee; mattress acceptance to change Sept. 1

The Phippsburg Select Board moved to create a five-member ad hoc solid-waste committee to review solid-waste contracts and tour disposal facilities before the town issues new RFPs.

"I'm making a motion that we set up a solid waste committee," one member said; the motion was seconded and the board discussed an approximate eight‑month timeline to align the committee’s work with contract renewals. Members emphasized keeping the panel small to enable decisions if one or two members are absent.

The board also addressed mattress disposal at the transfer station. Vendors notified the town of a new charge — reported in the discussion as about $35 per mattress — and members noted a surge in August mattress drop-offs (an attendant reported seeing more than 45 mattresses in two weeks). The board agreed to stop accepting mattresses and box springs at the Phippsburg transfer station on Sept. 1, install visible signage at gates and dumpsters, and direct attendants to enforce the policy. "As of September 1, we are no longer accepting mattresses and box springs," a board member stated during discussion.
