Ledyard officials flag biofuel and electric-bus mandates as potential cost drivers

Board and council participants discussed transportation contracting and potential state policy risks around fuel and bus technology.

Participants explained that the district purchases fuel separately from its transportation contract; the superintendent and council members described a prior state proposal that would have required communities to move to fully electric buses by certain target years and an alternative proposal to mandate biofuel. "There was a huge push by the superintendents association... to get that removed because of the cost associated with it," one participant said, and speakers noted electric buses were previously estimated at roughly three times the cost of diesel buses.

Officials said the bus company offered an electric-bus option during contract renewal but that the district's relatively seasoned fleet and the higher acquisition and maintenance costs made the option unattractive. They characterized both mandates as a potential risk for future budget cycles but said there was no active, imminent legislation to require the change at the time of the meeting.
