Subcommittee hears proposal for history walk and branch flags, staff backs 60‑foot American flag

Staff proposed a dedicated history walk through the park with interpretive panels focused on major U.S. involvements—from the Revolutionary War through the Global War on Terror—providing roughly a dozen panel opportunities along a route that could be expanded in later phases.

"We wanna stick to the major wars so starting with the revolutionary war and going all the way up to the global war terror gives us about 12 opportunities for panels," said Nick Steuben, Park Planning Manager. Steuben suggested routing options including a northerly route along the easterly edge or a southern route closer to playgrounds and high‑activity areas.

Staff also showed updated renderings that include six branch flags and a proposed 60‑foot flagpole for a larger American flag at the upper plateau. "This is now a 60 foot flagpole," Lancaster said, describing the selected size as large enough to signal the site’s purpose while avoiding obstructing coastal views or producing excessive wind noise. Councilmembers expressed support for the larger flag but asked staff to confirm sightline and noise impacts as designs are finalized.
