Commissioners debate whether the city should send letter urging TPS extension for Haiti

At the July 31 pre-agenda meeting, Commissioner Christopher McVoy asked the commission to put together a letter to Florida’s congressional delegation urging an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. McVoy said many community members have been affected by the recent federal decision, claiming workers who were previously legal are now at risk of losing jobs and status.

Commissioners split on whether the city should take a formal position on a federal immigration policy. Several members cautioned against setting a precedent of engaging in national politics, while others argued the commission has an obligation to protect residents’ health, safety and welfare when federal actions have local consequences. One commissioner said they would write letters individually and reach out to Haitian‑language media and community groups.

No formal city letter or vote was recorded at the pre-agenda meeting; commissioners indicated they would discuss the matter further at the regular meeting if desired and some pledged to write individual letters to federal lawmakers. The commission did not adopt an official municipal position during this session.
