Arlington forestry commission approves legislative priorities to press tree-canopy goals

The Forestry and Natural Resources Commission voted unanimously on July 23 to approve a revised package of legislative priorities that commissioners say will advance tree-canopy protections and related policy changes. Chair Carolyn circulated the edits provided by County legislative staff and asked members for a motion; the motion to approve passed after a second and a hand/voice vote.

Commissioners said they purposely kept the draft concise and focused on measures that would be most useful to county legislative staff. Commissioner John urged commissioners to watch for typographical errors and offered a technical edit; the group agreed to a minor cleanup before final submission. Commissioner Bob moved the motion to approve; another commissioner seconded the motion and the chair called the vote. Vincent, the county forestry staff liaison, confirmed the motion passed unanimously.

Commissioners discussed next steps for transmitting recommendations to county leaders and state-level review groups. Chair Carolyn said staff could supply additional rationale with the submission if needed, but that the commission's concise bullet list should be sufficient for the legislative package. The commission noted Brian Esty of county legislative affairs had provided guidance and had helped frame tree-canopy language for the priorities.

The commission's action will accompany other outreach the group plans this fall, including individual comment campaigns by residents on related county plans and staff briefings anticipated in September. The commission recorded no formal amendments to the motion during the meeting; the agenda item concluded with the clerk noting the motion carried.
