'Fill the Cracks' program connects people leaving jail to housing and services, presenter says

Deacon Greg Miller of Saint Patrick Parish presented "Fill the Cracks," a faith-based reentry initiative that helps people leaving jail get immediate transitional housing, clothing, transportation and connections to treatment and recovery services. Miller said the program began serving clients in December 2024 and has contacted about 179 clients overall; he described partnerships with destination providers including Ramsey County Detox and Union Gospel Mission and said the group emphasizes quick, practical services when release notices are short.

Miller described a typical recent case in which staff secured motel nights, food and transport to a detox bed. He said the program's average daily emergency-cost per client is about $150 and that the group is pursuing grants and nonprofit status. "Our mission statement is very faith based. We want to be the face, hands and feet of the Christian community for those that are struggling to regain a place in society," Miller said. County staff and the sheriff praised the program's ability to solve urgent barriers quickly and noted ongoing coordination with jail liaisons and probation. Miller asked for referrals and said the program plans to publish a county resource database to list housing, motels, food shelves and other emergency services.
