Town of Brownsburg board authorizes lateral firefighter hiring process to fill two openings

The Town of Brownsburg board voted to open a lateral firefighter hiring process to fill two current openings, the chair announced after a presentation from the fire chief.

The Fire Chief explained the town has two firefighter openings and requested authorization to open a lateral process. “They're only having 2 firefighter openings currently,” the Fire Chief said, and added the application window would “open up on July 15 and close on August 7, and then we'd proceed with the process from there.” The chief told the board the town could not justify running an academy for two recruits, which is why a lateral recruitment is being used: “So we don't, we can't put on an academy for 2 people,” the Fire Chief said.

The Chair asked for a motion to approve the chief's recommended lateral process. A board member moved to accept the recommendation, the motion was seconded and the authorization passed by voice vote.

The board did not specify application or screening details in the discussion; the Fire Chief said the process would follow the town’s existing rules for mayoral/commission appointments: “This will be done in accordance with the mayor commission rules. It does allow for that in our rules.” Next steps are to publish the application period July 15–August 7 and proceed with screening after the closing date.
