Council weighs shifting garbage-can responsibility to Republic Services

Mayor Steve Gibson reported the city met with Republic Services to address complaints about damaged lids and knocked-over cans and said service quality has improved since those meetings. The mayor summarized two options: the city continues its current can-management role, or Republic provides and maintains cans with residents paying roughly $1 per month—an arrangement the mayor said could remove the city from the "garbage can business."

Council directed public-works staff to return with formal presentation of options and cost details by the 10th. The topic was discussed as an operational item; no formal motion or vote occurred during the retreat.
