Commission recommends amendment to allow private playground at DeSoto House of Peace, approves unanimously

The DeSoto Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to recommend that city council amend Plan Development 109 to allow a private park or playground accessory to the DeSoto House of Peace and Community Center at 531 West Beltline Road. Staff described the site, said the property is in PD‑109 with a neighborhood services base zone, and recommended approval.

Miss Patel summarized notice and responses to nearby owners and said staff supported the request. "...and hence, the staff would be supporting this request," she said. Applicant Dr. Jihad Moturi, executive director of the DeSoto House of Peace, thanked the commission and said community members and mosque representatives were present in support. Commissioners asked whether the playground would be outdoors, whether amenities such as restrooms or water would be provided, and how a 'private' outdoor playground would be enforced; the applicant and staff said it will be an enclosed, fenced outdoor playground relying on existing site lighting and that no new restroom or water fixtures are planned.

The motion to recommend approval of zoning case Z1556‑26 passed unanimously. Staff noted the site plan and final permitting remain subject to trade review and permitting processes before construction.
