Larchmont police chief to retire; lieutenant promoted and new officer sworn in

Police Chief Christopher McNerney told the board on July 27 that he plans to retire effective Aug. 29 and introduced Lieutenant Joseph Paprotta as the department's next chief. Paprotta took the oath of office and trustees voted to promote him effective 08/29/2026.

"It's been an honor to serve the residents and the board for the last 4.5 years," Chief McNerney said, adding that he is confident the department will be in "outstanding hands under Joe Paprotta's leadership." Paprotta recited the oath: "I, Joseph Thomas Paprotta, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution... and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of police chief effective 08/29/2026." Family members participated in the pinning ceremony.

The chief also introduced new police officer Mabel Mejia, who described her training and prior service with NYPD and other city agencies; Mejia was sworn in and received a badge. Chief McNerney and board members praised departmental achievements during his tenure, including equipment upgrades, accreditation efforts and expanded safety-camera coverage.
