Commission approves restoration of windows and storefronts for 421 Caroline St.

Robert Hulick proposed a two-stage renovation of the vacant concrete corner building at 421 Caroline Street that would restore historic window and storefront openings visible in archival photographs, remove coral-stone tile on the facade and replace storefronts with a four-panel sliding configuration. Staff found supporting evidence in historic photographs and earlier newspaper references and recommended approval for the exterior changes.

"Hart does find that this meets the guidelines," staff member Daniella said, and commissioners voted to approve the exterior renovation and associated work. Staff noted allowable smoke-tinted glass for the commercial storefronts; permits will proceed consistent with the approved exterior plan.
