Women’s Professional Baseball League debuts in Springfield this weekend

A representative for the host club told the council the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) will play in Springfield starting Saturday, and that opening night has already sold out.

"The women's professional baseball league is a long time coming and, for these women, it's their dream for this chance to play pro baseball," William Moss said, thanking the city for hosting the teams. Commissioner Justine Siegel said the league expects to bring "thousands and thousands of fans" to Springfield and highlighted plans for group packages and community nights with local partners.

Council members welcomed the announcement and asked logistical questions about overflow parking, family activities and opportunities for the council to participate in ceremonial first pitches. Organizers said local businesses and vendors helped prepare Robin Roberts Stadium and that every game will be streamed live; exact broadcast partners will be announced soon.

The presentation closed with an invitation for residents to attend group nights and community-focused events at the ballpark; organizers said some sponsorship activations and community benefits (for example, educator nights) are already planned.
