Alderman Conley warned residents that new customers who sign up for Republic Waste online may see a $50-per-month charge on the company website, rather than the city-controlled rate of roughly $15 per month ("$45 0.25"/month within the city's rate cap). She said that, although the correct city rate is available by phone, Republic's website does not present the city rate to new customers and asked that staff investigate and that Republic demonstrate compliance.
"If anyone's paying over $15 a month for their garbage through Republic...please reach out to your Alderman," Conley said, adding that the city negotiated the lower rate to keep costs affordable. Council members agreed the issue warranted follow-up and suggested staff press Republic for system changes and public education so residents are not overcharged when they sign up online.
Councilors said they would expect Republic to provide evidence that its website reflects the city's rates or to implement website changes so customers see the correct price when signing up online.
