Nomination Committee Weighs Eliminating Itself or Revising Bylaw Wording to ‘May’

Members of the Virginia Board of Social Work Nomination Committee discussed whether the committee should continue to exist or be dissolved. Executive Director Maria Stransky asked whether a nominating committee was necessary, noting the Boards for Counseling and Psychology do not have a similar committee and that the nominating committee is relatively small.

Committee member Joan Landolt voiced concerns about eliminating the committee and sought clarification on how nominations would proceed without it; committee staff said the full Board would determine the process. Jennifer Lang proposed an alternative to dissolution: change the bylaw wording from “shall” to “may,” which would provide flexibility in how nominations are handled. Lang said that a revision to the bylaws could not be decided at the July 10 meeting and would require a future action by the Board.
