UTA, UDOT outline Frontrunner 2X plan to double service frequency

UTA and the Utah Department of Transportation presented the Frontrunner 2X project to the Davis County Commission, describing a strategy of extending double‑track segments in key locations to allow more frequent trains. Frank Parker, a project presenter, summarized the service goal: "From 30 minutes to 15 minutes during peak hours and from 60 minutes to 30 during off peak time." The presentation included a short project video and a lineup of the design and contractor team.

County and agency presenters said design is nearly complete, procurement for trainsets has been awarded and environmental studies are done; construction is expected to begin next year and last roughly three years. Ryan McKenzie, county clerk, noted the project schedule and delivery: "By 2030, it will be complete and we'll have that 15 minute service." Presenters described system benefits including increased capacity, improved reliability, and projected travel‑time reductions in the corridor over the coming decades.

The presenters emphasized that the approach is strategic: double tracking is targeted to places where it gives the biggest reduction in gaps between trains rather than converting the whole corridor to double track at once. They said the new train sets will be added to the fleet, new maintenance capacity is planned, and the agencies will coordinate closely with local jurisdictions during design and construction.
