Controller proposes single mileage rate of 46.5¢ to simplify reimbursements

Scott Park proposed simplifying mileage reimbursement by eliminating a two‑tier system and moving to a single 46.5¢ per mile rate for personal vehicle use. Park explained he averaged rental‑car costs and IRS moving rates to reach 46.5¢: "I've pulled some different car rental invoices and came up with 46.5¢ a mile." He said the single rate reduces administrative burden and will be adjusted each January to align with IRS changes.

Commissioners discussed the tradeoffs — some noted a single rate could reduce the county's incentive to use available fleet vehicles, while staff said stricter departmental rules can still require use of county vehicles. Park said the approach is a pragmatic compromise given limited infrastructure to track vehicle availability.
