UTA/UDOT present Frontrunner 2X plan to double peak service in corridor

UTA and UDOT officials updated the Davis County Commission on the Frontrunner 2X strategic double-tracking project, saying it will expand parts of the 83-mile corridor to allow trains to run twice as often. "That's the Frontrunner 2X project," presenter Frank Parker told commissioners, describing how adding targeted double-track sections will reduce peak headways from 30 minutes to 15 minutes and off‑peak headways from 60 to 30 minutes.

Project staff listed concrete elements of the plan: 11 double-track sections in the corridor, one planned new station near Bluffdale, at least one track realignment near Warm Springs, acquisition of 10 new train sets, and a new maintenance facility sited on property near the Davis and Salt Lake county line to support the expanded fleet. Presenter (identified in the meeting materials) said design work is progressing, procurement of the trains is underway, environmental studies are complete, and construction will begin next year with an anticipated commissioning and full 15‑minute peak service by 2030.

Commissioners and staff asked about local impacts in Davis County. Project staff pointed to specific sections north of Clearfield and Woods Cross where double-tracking will occur and warned of temporary road impacts and irrigation work that could require closures. The team said early work is being scheduled this winter to coordinate with related I‑15 construction and to avoid overlapping closures. Project staff also committed to community outreach and notifications for residents near tracks and announced a project website and contact information for questions.
