At the meeting Michelle (speaker 10) updated the council on a recent change to cemetery headstone height standards. She said earlier guidance had set a 36-inch maximum but, following advice from Grace Carroll and additional review, the standard had been reverted to 24 inches.
Michelle said the city code also allows applicants to request a different size by contacting the city. She recommended establishing a written agreement for exceptions so the city would not incur liability if an oversized marker settled or tipped on older graves. "So, right now, it is 24 inches," Michelle said, and added that staff will provide a pathway for families to request a variance and sign an agreement where appropriate.
Councilmembers thanked staff for the clarification and staff said they would track requests for exceptions and advise families about potential settling and liability.
