Disabled Resources Center outlines services for nine cities including Signal Hill; city to add resource links

Jennifer Kumiyama, who said she became executive director of the Disabled Resources Center (DRC) on April 1, described DRC's independent living programs and services and invited Signal Hill residents to use the center's resources.

"We were founded in 1976, and we serve 9 cities including Signal Hill," Kumiyama said. She told the council that because "86 percent of our staff are people with disabilities, DRC is more than a service provider — it is a community of peers" and described assistive‑technology access, benefits counseling for SSI/SSDI, Medi‑Cal, and employment and independent‑living skills programs. The council asked staff to add DRC links and event information to the city's website and communications channels so residents can find programs and upcoming advocacy series and film‑festival events.

Kumiyama said the DRC has office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a satellite office in North Long Beach; she offered to coordinate with city staff for outreach and inclusion in city resource lists.
