Council weighs Shore Acres consolidation costs, new crews and possible trash rate increase

Public works staff described operational and budget impacts if the neighboring Shore Acres area consolidates with La Porte, saying the addition would bring roughly 709 single-family homes and require added residential and heavy-trash capacity.

"Shore Acres generate approximately 780 tons of garbage over the year," Ray said, and staff estimated the first-year personnel and equipment package would cost more than $1.2 million; recurring year-two costs were shown above $500,000. To cover consolidation-specific expenses, staff proposed a rate option that would raise the typical monthly solid-waste charge by about $8.26 (from $18 to roughly $26.26). Council discussed deferring a final rate decision until after consolidation outcomes and asked staff to return the numbers as part of the budget process.
