Board narrows grading policy, shifts specifics to regulation after late‑work debate

The Prince George County School Board on July 27 approved a narrowed grading policy and directed staff to transfer detailed procedures into an administrative regulation after members debated how much the policy should specify about late work and grading consistency.

Staff member (S4) told board members the drafted policy sets common grading expectations and that the regulation is where implementation specifics belong. Several board members disagreed about the placement of late‑work rules: one board member (S5) said, “If a teacher tells you your assignment's due tomorrow, it's due tomorrow,” arguing that deadlines uphold teacher authority; staff and others said a consistent standard across schools would help families and intervention teams.

Director (S8) described how inconsistent teacher practices create burdens for parents and intervention teams, saying families experienced very different expectations across classrooms and that consistency would help parents know what to expect. After discussion, Board member (S7) moved to approve only sections 1–3 of the proposed policy and shift remaining sections into a regulation; the motion was seconded and approved on roll call. Staff said they will bring back both the revised policy and the updated regulation for further review.
