Elizabeth Emery urges board to publicize Lake County funding shortfall, compares per-pupil funding to neighboring districts

Elizabeth Emery, addressing Chair Mathias, board members and Superintendent Carnegie, urged the district to do more to explain how state funding is allocated and to increase public outreach. She said Lake County Schools received “approximately 9,500 per student” for 2024–25 while neighboring Sumter County received “approximately 13,000,” and argued that decades of funding inequity have created staffing and competitive challenges.

Emery requested the district use presentations, the district website, newsletters and social media to raise awareness, and she noted the district’s chief financial officer, Scott Ward, has already explained the current fund balance and funding challenges to employees. “If our employees are not fully aware of the impacts of the state’s funding formula on Lake County Schools, then the general public is likely unaware as well,” Emery said. She closed by offering collaboration with the district to identify solutions and outreach strategies.

The public comment drew no board questions or immediate action; Chair Mathias thanked Emery and the meeting proceeded to the advertised public-hearing agenda items.
