City outlines multi‑year water filtration project and reports fiber upgrades underway

City Manager Rob Schomer updated council on two infrastructure topics: broadband fiber installations and a planned water filtration and system improvement project.

On broadband, Schomer said two companies—Alta Fiber and AT&T—are actively installing or upgrading infrastructure; Alta Fiber is "just about done" while AT&T is performing targeted upgrades of existing routes. "We do have currently two companies that are actively installing and expanding their infrastructure," Schomer said.

On water, Schomer said the city has engaged an engineering firm and begun scope and initial design work for a large water filtration project that could include a new facility and efforts to protect against PFAS and other contaminants. He said the city has secured initial EPA funding for early scope work and expects design work through 2027 with construction and substantial completion likely into 2028. Schomer emphasized the city’s intent to choose a delivery method that balances design input and risk allocation and said staff will return with more specific target metrics during the design phase.
