Larchmont police chief to retire; lieutenant promoted and new officer sworn in

Police Chief Christopher McNerney reported recent crime trends and enforcement activity, announced his retirement effective Aug. 29 and introduced department personnel changes. "This will be my last meeting. I'm planning on retiring, effective August 29," he said, adding that it had been "an honor to serve the residents and the board for the last 4.5 years."

Chief McNerney reviewed enforcement highlights including three reported larcenies from unlocked vehicles in the past week (one July 21 Beach Avenue incident where a garage-door remote was used) and leaf-blower enforcement that produced four complaints and three officer-initiated summonses since the June meeting. He thanked officers and staff and introduced Police Officer Mabel Deliza Mejia, noting her NYPD auxiliary and related experience. "So I ask you to please join me as we welcome Mabel Mejia to the village," the chief said.

The board recognized Lieutenant Joseph (Joe) Paprotta’s record of leadership and service and passed a resolution to promote him to police chief effective Aug. 29; an oath was administered at the meeting. A proclamation later honored Chief McNerney’s tenure and noted grants and technical upgrades obtained during his service, including body-worn cameras, portable radios, in-car video and updated CAD/RMS systems and the department’s New York State law-enforcement accreditation effort.

"Joe has earned this through his work, his judgment, and his commitment to the people of Larchmont," the chief said of the promoted lieutenant. Trustees voted by voice and recorded the promotion as approved.
