MCPS launches AI staff training, drafts regulation and requires vendor impact info

MCPS officials said July 27 that the district has begun implementing staff training and procurement safeguards for artificial intelligence while it finishes a draft AI regulation.

Kimberly Fields said MCPS launched an employee AI compliance module on July 1 and is developing professional development tied to an AI regulation that will supplement the IGS Educational Technology Policy. "We did actually launch on July 1, with our compliance training for employees an AI module," she said. Fields described an algorithmic impact assessment that vendors must complete to explain how their tools work, whether they have bias, and how they were trained, and she said MCPS requests third‑party security reports such as SOC 2 or ISO attestations when vetting products.

Councilmembers asked whether third‑party reports are made public; Fields said such reports are often proprietary and cannot always be released. Officials also discussed MSDE guidance and Senate Bill 720, which directs state guidance and an evaluation rubric that MCPS expects to use in local regulation. Dr. Moran said the district will implement curricular lessons to teach students how to evaluate and validate AI outputs as part of digital responsibility instruction.
