Council proclaims National Farmers Market Week and spotlights markets’ local role

Councilmember Andrew Friedson opened a brief ceremony at the July 28 Montgomery County Council session, reading a proclamation recognizing the first full week of August as National Farmers Market Week and urging residents to visit county markets.

Local market organizers and county staff framed farmers markets as more than a place to buy produce. Heather Breskin, director of the county’s Office of Food Systems Resilience, said markets “are probably the best illustration of a functional, healthy, food system,” highlighting their role in expanding access to nutritious, culturally relevant foods and supporting climate, economic and equity goals. Vendors and market founders added that markets boost small businesses and local economies: Debbie Moser, co‑founder of Central Farm Markets, noted markets’ role in feeding residents and supporting nonprofit food distribution partnerships.

The council presented the proclamation “in recognition of the farmers, vendors, and community partners whose dedication strengthens our local community” and encouraged residents to support farmers markets throughout Montgomery County.
