Commissioners press for VDOT turn‑lane analysis and inter‑county coordination on campground roads

Commissioners highlighted VDOT’s memorandum noting that a turn‑lane and taper analysis should be performed at the Route 340 intersection with Route 609 and that a commercial entrance will be required for the proposed campground. The vice chair read the VDOT recommendation into the record and noted a discrepancy between VDOT’s cited average daily traffic (ADT) of 780 and the applicant’s study figure of 760.

The applicant’s engineer, Tyler Austin of Race Engineering, told the commission the firm would comply with any VDOT‑required measures but said their traffic model showed the proposed volumes "do not warrant this traffic impact analysis at all." Commissioners asked staff to coordinate with Rockingham County to determine who should request a broader traffic‑impact study for roads outside Page County’s jurisdiction.
