Groundwater, wastewater and karst geology loom over campground review

Multiple commissioners raised groundwater and karst geology as central concerns for the proposed campground, asking whether the development could draw down neighboring wells and what hydrological studies were available. The vice chair cited packet figures for per‑site usage — "primitive site average consumption is 50... and for a full RV hookup it's double that" — and asked staff and the applicant for more detailed demand estimates and hydrological assessments.

Applicant engineers said the campground design would include treated wastewater discharged to a drain field (rather than an unregulated discharge) and temporary storage to buffer peak flows; preliminary figures mentioned about 20,000 gallons of storage to meet peak demands. Commissioners emphasized that the Virginia Department of Health review and any required approvals would be conditions precedent to operation, and asked staff to request additional technical documentation from the applicant and state agencies.
