Parish president reports limited storm impacts, pump-station work and community service events

Parish President Jewell reported that the parish prepared for a recent tropical storm and saw only minimal rainfall and limited outages. He summarized emergency operations center actions, pre-storm checks at pump stations, fueling of generators, and sandbag deployments at Bridge Parks and Battle Lane in Des Allemands. "Thankfully, the majority of the rain stayed off the coast, and we saw only minimal showers and wind," Jewell said.

Jewell described public-works operations: CC Road is closed starting July 27 to all traffic until Aug. 11 for pump-station work to lay discharge pipes between pump stations and the spillway; the parish coordinated the two closures to minimize disruptions. He also said crews are replacing filter media at the Westbank water treatment plant and will perform testing and disinfection before returning the filter to service.

The president announced community programming: a small-business workshop on Aug. 26 at the East Regional Library, a pet microchip event on Aug. 14 at the parish shelter (921 Deputy Jeff Watson Drive in Luling) offering free microchipping for residents, and a household hazardous-waste collection on Sept. 12 at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center (in partnership with St. John the Baptist Parish). He thanked public-works and community services staff for feeding 7,107 meals to children this summer through parish programs.

Council members asked follow-up questions about event details and service eligibility; Jewell said staff would supply specific flyers and registration links to the council.
