Father urges transparency and action in death of Brazoria County teen

John Gabriel Mendoza Sr. identified himself and addressed the Commissioners Court to demand urgency and transparency in the investigation of his son's death on June 1, 2026. Mendoza said his son, John Gabriel Mendoza Jr., was an 18-year-old Brazoria County resident whose life was taken "as a result of what I believe was a careless and reckless act" and described existing evidence he says should prompt quicker action.

"My son's life was taken from us," Mendoza said. "The evidence exists. The body camera footage exists. The dash camera footage exists." He said nearly nine weeks had passed without charges or what he described as appropriate progress and urged elected leaders to pursue accountability and transparency.

The court expressed condolences and accepted Mendoza's remarks; no formal response or commitment to a specific investigatory action was recorded on the public record during the meeting.
