Residents urge kitchen, accessibility upgrades at Huachuca City Activity Center

Several residents and councilmembers identified the Huachuca City Activity Center as a priority for CDBG or State Special Projects funding, arguing upgrades could expand meals, programming and rental revenue.

"The ramp is great, but once they get to the doors, they can’t open them," resident Diane Hildebrant said, urging repairs that would make the building useable for people with mobility limitations. Town Manager Suzanne Harvey and SEAGO staff told the council that a modernization project could include ADA-compliant doors and bathrooms, parking improvements and, if needed, preliminary engineering under a State Special Projects grant to make the site shovel-ready for later CDBG implementation.

Councilmembers noted that CDBG rules favor shovel-ready work and specific project descriptions; SEAGO advised the town to include detailed scope, cost and environmental-review status when listing the Activity Center modernization in the town’s application materials. Mayor Johann Wallace said staff will record the proposal so it can be considered during the formal application process.
