Clay County approves space-needs study as commissioners weigh jail, courthouse options

Clay County commissioners authorized a space-needs study contract with Klein McCarthy Architects to assess the Courthouse and Public Safety Center and to identify alternatives for jail capacity and office space. The board discussed three broad options: a new off-site justice center, a new Public Safety Center plus courthouse remodel, or on-site expansion and renovation of existing buildings; architects cited aging roofs, mechanical systems near end of life, and space and security shortfalls in the jail and court areas.

Architect Scott Fettig told the board the study would produce quantified cost estimates; Sheriff Andy Howe reported the county is regularly boarding female inmates out of county because of local capacity limits and estimated long-term boarding costs “in the neighborhood” of hundreds of thousands per year if no local solution is found. Commissioners directed staff to form a review committee including City of Vermillion and Chamber representatives to solicit public input and report back with recommendations and cost options, with the architects asked to return with firm estimates for the three options.
