Clay County reorganizes, names officers and sets 2020 precincts and election pay

The Clay County Board of Commissioners completed its 2020 reorganization on Jan. 7, electing Travis Mockler chair and Phyllis Packard vice chair and setting several administrative policies for the year.

The board approved a slate of appointments and designations — including Rod Polley as Highway Superintendent through Jan. 4, 2022 — and passed a pair of election resolutions establishing precincts and polling places (Resolution #2020‑01) and setting precinct official fees (Resolution #2020‑02). The board also set a county burial allowance at $1,900 and established mileage at $0.42 per mile.

County Auditor Carri Crum administered nominations and the board recorded unanimous votes on the officer selections. Vice Chair Packard praised the new chair during the proceedings, saying Mockler “does an excellent job of devoting additional time” to duties beyond the minimum.

Why this matters: the precinct and fee resolutions set the legal framework for how local elections will be staffed and paid; they also name the legal newspapers and official banks the county will use to publish notices and manage deposits for 2020.

What’s next: the clerk’s office will publish the precinct map and the Auditor’s Office will implement the new pay schedule for election judges and supervisors as required by Resolution #2020‑02.
